Hot Tub Decks in Kirkland & the Eastside
A filled six-person hot tub with people in it weighs 5,000 to 7,000 pounds, concentrated on about 50 square feet. Ordinary deck framing is designed for a fraction of that. Hans Construction builds hot tub platforms, recessed decks and reinforced pads with footings and framing engineered for the tub you choose, and with a service panel so the technician can reach the pump.

Three ways to place a hot tub
| Option | How it works | Pros | Installed range for support |
|---|---|---|---|
| On a reinforced deck | Dedicated beams, closer joists and added footings under the tub footprint | Tub at deck level, easy access | $6,000 – $15,000 added to the deck |
| Recessed into a deck | Tub sits on a concrete pad below; deck built around it at lip height | Clean look, easy entry, lower profile | $10,000 – $25,000 added to the deck |
| On a concrete or paver pad | Tub on grade; steps or a small deck around it | Simplest structure | $3,500 – $9,000 |
What the design must cover
- Load: tub weight full, plus occupants, on the footprint; footings and beams sized for it.
- Access: one side of the tub cabinet reachable for service; on recessed tubs, a removable deck panel.
- Electrical: a dedicated GFCI disconnect within sight of the tub and at the code-required distance from it.
- Water: a drain plan for emptying the tub, and decking that tolerates splash.
- Privacy and wind: a screen wall, pergola or pavilion; a cover lifter needs clearance behind the tub.
- Permits: most Eastside cities require a permit for a hot tub on a deck and for the electrical.
Under a roof
A tub under a pavilion or louvered roof gets used all year and keeps the cover clean. Louvered roofs are a favorite for spas: open for stars, closed for rain. See Patio Roofs & Pavilions.

Hot tub deck questions
Can my existing deck hold a hot tub?
Almost never without reinforcement. We check the framing and footings and design added support under the tub footprint.
Recessed or on top?
Recessed looks best and is easiest to step into, but costs more and needs careful service access. On-top is simpler and leaves the cabinet visible.
Does the deck get wet and rot around the tub?
Composite or PVC decking and taped framing handle splash well; cedar around a tub needs more maintenance.
How far from the house does it need to be?
Electrical rules set minimum distances from outlets and the disconnect; local codes may add setbacks. We lay it out at the visit.
