Deck & Outdoor Living Builder in Kirkland and the Eastside
Hans Construction builds decks, covered patios, pergolas and outdoor kitchens for homes across Kirkland, Bellevue and the Eastside. One crew designs the space, pulls the permit and builds it, with framing and drainage details chosen for Puget Sound rain, shade and moss rather than for a dry-climate brochure.

Composite or cedar?
It is the first question every homeowner asks, and in a wet, shaded Northwest yard the answer is different from what national advice says. Our free Composite vs Cedar tool compares fifteen years of ownership cost, maintenance and lifespan for your deck size and exposure. The Composite vs Cedar guide explains why shade and rain decide it.
Cedar vs composite, for your deck
Why decks fail here, and how we build against it
A Puget Sound deck rarely fails from sun. It fails from water that never dries: a ledger without flashing that rots the rim joist behind it, joist tops that hold moisture under every board, footings set too shallow in soft glacial soil, and cedar laid on the ground side of a shaded yard. Every Hans deck starts with the parts you will never see:
- Ledger flashed and spaced off the house so water drains instead of sitting.
- Butyl joist tape on every joist and beam top.
- Concrete footings set below the frost line on undisturbed soil.
- Ground-contact-rated framing, stainless or coated fasteners, and engineered connectors at every post and beam.
- Board spacing and airflow planned for the yard's shade and the deck's height.
Our guides cover the owner’s side: a seasonal maintenance routine for this climate, and how to tell whether an old deck needs repair or replacement.

How a project runs
- Design visit: we measure the yard, look at sun, slope, drainage and the house, and talk through how you will use the space.
- 3D plan and fixed quote: a drawing you can walk around and a price that does not move unless you change the plan.
- Permit: we prepare the drawings and submit when the city requires one. The Deck Permit Checker tells you whether yours does.
- Build: one crew from footings to final railing, with a walkthrough at the end.
