Outdoor Fireplaces and Fire Pits in Kirkland & the Eastside
A fire feature turns a deck or patio into somewhere to sit on a cool evening, which on the Eastside is most evenings. Hans Construction builds gas fire tables, built-in fire pits and full outdoor fireplaces, from $3,000 for a gas fire bowl to $60,000 for a masonry fireplace with a chimney, and we place each one with the clearances and burn rules that apply where you live.

Gas or wood
Gas starts with a switch, burns without smoke or sparks, and is allowed on many decks and under covered structures that wood fires are not. Wood gives real heat, crackle and smell, but needs distance from structures and trees and is subject to outdoor burning restrictions during air-quality and fire-danger alerts in the region. Most clients on decks and near houses choose gas.
Safety and clearances
- Distance from the house, roof eaves, trees and property lines as required by the manufacturer and local fire code.
- Non-combustible base and surround on decks; composite decking needs a manufacturer-approved hearth pad.
- Clearance to any roof or pergola above, per the unit's listing.
- Gas lines sized and pressure-tested, with a shutoff within reach.
Building a fire pit with seating
The common design on a paver patio is a round or square gas fire pit at the center, with a seat wall on one or two sides and chairs filling the rest. The pit sits on the same compacted base as the patio, and the gas line runs under the pavers in a sleeve.

Fire feature questions
Can I have a fire pit on my composite deck?
A gas fire table rated for deck use, on a manufacturer-approved pad, yes. Wood-burning on a deck, no.
Can a fireplace go under a covered patio?
A gas fireplace designed for covered use, with the listed clearances to the ceiling, often yes. We confirm with the unit's installation manual and the city.
Are wood fires allowed in my city?
Recreational fires are generally allowed with size and distance limits, but burn bans apply during air-quality and fire-danger alerts. Gas features are usually exempt from those bans; check current notices before a wood fire.
Do I need a permit?
For the gas line, yes. For a masonry fireplace, a building permit as well.
