The Hollywood Hill yard before
A sunny back lawn on a one-acre lot with a small concrete pad by the door and views over pasture.
Designing for Hollywood Hill
A broad deck at door level stepping down two wide steps to the lawn, with a cedar pergola over the dining end and a retractable canopy for afternoon shade. The owners wanted real wood and were willing to oil it.
The Hollywood Hill structure
Footings were sited clear of the septic reserve area. Pressure-treated framing with joist tape, two feet of airflow under the deck, and cedar boards fastened with stainless screws. The pergola posts land on their own footings through the deck.
Building it in Hollywood Hill
Framing in week one, decking and steps in week two, pergola and canopy in the final days. The first oil coat went on after the boards had dried.
The Hollywood Hill result
A cedar deck in the sun, where cedar does best, with shade on demand and a look that suits the setting.
Sun, space and a love of wood? Cedar is still the answer.
